Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, is a compassionate yet riveting piece of English literature that supports the movement for equality of suppressed women during a most tumultuous time during the 1800’s. Hawthorne’s use of emotional diction and imagery throughout his novel employs a deplorable tone upon the story. It serves as a stark representation of an imaginative yet realistic example of the indifference of men and women during these changing times. Deeply held Puritanical beliefs led countless of people to believe that individuals, especially women, who committed sins of any type would never reach heaven upon their passing. Men, on the other hand, were judged less severely if accused of a crime. Throughout the eras, literature has mirrored the social changes taking place in English society specifically in regards to gender roles of female characters. The Elizabethan era, which lasted from 1558 to 1603, is often referred to as the golden age by historians where many transitions in English society regarding marriage and gender took place (Ivic 110). It was a time in which wives were viewed as the property of their husbands (Ivic 110). However, every woman was expected to marry and be dependent on her husband or male relatives throughout her life (Ivic 98). Conversely, the Victorian era, which lasted from 1837 to 1901 was an era with similar social customs regarding marriage and family relations; however, there were slight ideological shifts in society which allowed for more independent women (Ledbetter 25). The Victorian society placed a greater emphasis on proper attire and etiquette of a woman. The ideal marriage still remained one in which the woman stayed at home, took car e of the household and made preparations until her husband came home from work. The difference between the two eras lied in the fact that the Victorian era was an era in which it was more acceptable to value a woman’s opinion (Ledbetter 30). Both the Elizabethan and Victorian era held similar beliefs about marriage and family customs, however slight differences regarding social etiquette and increased autonomy for women played an important role in the literature written in both eras. Channel conflict and solution When there are third parties involved in distributing the products there are bound to be conflicts and grievances. The types of conflict are: horizontal or vertical conflict, multichannel conflict and inter type culture and the reason can be of various type. One of the most frequent reasons for conflict is miss communication or communication gap in between the company and the third parties involved. In order to resolve a conflict it is important to locate the issue and then analysis it to understand the nature and intensity, the source and the impact of the conflict should also be analysed.
